Svetlana Slapšak
Literary historian, anthropologist, classical philologist, writer
Svetlana Slapšak is literary historian, anthropologist, classical philologist, and writer. She graduated, obtained her master’s degree, and earned her PhD in Ancient Studies from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Belgrade. She has taught at numerous universities in former Yugoslavia, Europe, and the United States. She was a full professor of anthropology of the ancient world, gender studies, and Balkan studies (since 2003), and the coordinator of study programs at ISH (Institute of Humanities Studies) in Ljubljana (since 1997), serving as the dean of ISH from 2003 to 2013. She retired in 2014. At the Faculty of Philosophy in Ljubljana, she taught Serbian and Croatian literature (1985–1992) in the Slavic Studies department and Balkan Women (1995–2012) in the Sociology of Culture department. She has been the editor-in-chief of the journal ProFemina in Belgrade since 1994. She served as the director of the Serbian Cultural Center “Danilo Kiš” in Ljubljana (2009–2013) and has been the artistic director of SKC “Danilo Kiš” since 2013, as well as the director of the Institute for Balkan and Mediterranean Studies and Culture in Ljubljana (2009). She was nominated, as part of the group “Thousand Women for Peace,” for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.
